Hardwood vs. Softwood
Wood is typically categorized into either hardwood or softwood. Although there is some truth to the density of the wood in each category of either hard or soft wood, it doesn't hold up to every type of wood. For instance, balsa wood is technically considered a hardwood; however, it is one of the least dense of hardwoods making it appear to be soft. (Meaning, it will dent easily.)
So, what is the actual meaning of hardwood vs softwood?
For a wood species to be classified as either a hardwood or softwood, we must look into the reproduction of the plant. Wait. What? Yes, the seed of the tree determines its classification.
Hardwood trees produce seeds with some type of covering. (Think of a fruit tree or acorns.) Softwood trees produce seeds that just fall to the ground. (Think pine trees where the pine cone houses the seeds that are blown into the wind once matured.) To put it simply, conifer trees are considered softwood and deciduous trees are considered hardwood. (But again, balsa wood shows there are exceptions to the rule.)
Should you use hardwood or softwood for your custom furniture?
The first thing to remember is that any solid wood structure (whether furniture or house built with sold wood) is susceptible to expansion and contraction. This is why the construction of the custom piece of furniture is so important in order to minimize movement.
If you're looking for beautiful grain patterns, color, and durability, you will want to use hardwood. It is more expensive than softwood, but it will last much longer.
If you're wanting to paint the piece of furniture, you will typically use softwood. It is less expensive than hardwood and doesn't last as long.
Whether or not to use hardwood or softwood for your custom piece of furniture comes down to what you are wanting to build, the look you're wanting, and the intended purpose of the piece of furniture.
